Concrete Patio Installation in Columbus, OH

A patio is an outdoor floor, and building one properly means getting four things right before anyone thinks about furniture: the base under it, the grade across it, the reinforcement in it, and the joints cut into it. Get those wrong and the mistakes stay hidden under a table until the second spring, when the corner has dropped and the water is running toward your foundation.

Clay defines the job here. Franklin County sits on glacial till, and that clay drains slowly, traps water beneath a slab, heaves when it freezes, and pulls away from the concrete in a dry late summer. Pour straight onto it and the patio rides every bit of that movement. So we don't. Sod and topsoil come off, the subgrade gets compacted, and a compacted stone base goes in to drain and hold position.

Water handling is the other half. Central Ohio storms drop a lot of rain quickly, and the single most common patio mistake we're called to correct is pitch running toward the house, a slab quietly delivering every storm to the foundation wall and icing over at the back door in December. Our patios fall away from the structure at a steady grade, and downspouts get routed before the pour, because a gutter dumping under a slab edge will carve a void through clay in two seasons.

Then there's shade. Mature trees across Clintonville, Bexley, and Upper Arlington keep north-facing patios damp, and damp concrete grows a film and turns slick. Texture and sealer choice account for that, and we'll say when your yard needs more grip than the default.

Layout and use. We talk through how the space gets used — table for eight, grill station, fire pit, hot tub someday — because use decides size, shape, thickness, and where the joints belong. Then we paint the layout on the grass so you can walk it before we dig.

Excavation and base. Sod and topsoil out, subgrade compacted, crushed limestone base built and compacted in lifts. Roots in the dig zone get cut cleanly rather than torn.

Forms and grade. Forms set to fall away from the house. An isolation joint goes in against the foundation so the patio and the building never fight each other.

Steel and pour. Rebar or fiber matched to the slab, then air-entrained 4,000 PSI concrete. A patio sees the same winter a driveway does and gets the same protection.

Finish and joints. Broom finish for traction, or one of the decorative options below. Control joints cut on time and placed so they read as intentional lines rather than random scars.

Cure and handoff. Cure applied, written timeline for foot traffic and furniture, sealer plan explained. Then it's yours.

Broom finish is the honest default. Clean, grippy when wet, easiest on the budget, and it ages without pretending to be something else. Most patios we build are broom-finished and nobody regrets it.

Stamped concrete presses pattern mats into the fresh slab for slate, flagstone, or brick looks, with color worked in and sealer over the top. In a freeze-thaw climate it has one concrete advantage over pavers: no joints for frost to heave individual units out of level. It costs more, it needs resealing every couple of years, and we'll tell you both numbers before you commit.

Exposed aggregate trades smoothness for serious traction, a good call for shaded corners and pool surrounds. Colored broom finish splits the difference, warming the standard gray without stamped pricing.

Patios rarely arrive alone, either. Steps down from a back door, a hot tub pad, or a shed slab alongside all run through our Concrete Slab Installation work, and it's cheaper in one mobilization than in three separate visits.

Size and shape lead. Square footage sets material, and curves take more form work than straight runs. Worth it when the yard calls for it, but it's labor, and we price it plainly.

Access is the quiet driver in Columbus backyards. A yard the truck can chute into pours quickly. A fenced Grandview Heights or German Village backyard where every yard rides a buggy through a 36-inch gate takes crew hours, and occasionally a fence panel comes off and goes back on.

Then the ground: extra excavation where clay is soft, grade corrections, downspout rerouting. Finish sets the top end, from broom baseline up through stamped. Extras like a thickened fire pit section or footings for a future pergola get priced in up front rather than discovered later.

Settling next to the house is the classic. Foundation backfill stays looser than undisturbed ground for decades, so a patio poured on it without real compaction sinks toward the building and then drains toward it too.

Heaving comes with the clay. Saturated ground freezes, expands, and lifts a corner out of plane. Base drainage and proper depth handle it, but only if they went in on day one.

Downspout undermining is its own category, and it's the most preventable failure on this list. One gutter outlet under a slab edge, two seasons, one void.

Slickness rounds it out on the shaded north sides in the older tree neighborhoods. Existing patios with these problems aren't automatically tear-outs either. Some are candidates for Concrete Repair and Resurfacing, and you'll get that verdict straight.

Ask where the water goes. A contractor who can't walk you through pitch, downspouts, and drainage on your specific yard is planning to figure it out during the pour, at your expense.

Get the spec written: base depth, PSI, air entrainment, reinforcement, joint layout. On decorative work ask to see the joint plan, because a control joint sawed diagonally across a flagstone pattern is the calling card of a crew that never made one.

Confirm insurance. And treat an unusually low bid the way you'd treat the clay itself, on the assumption something soft is underneath.
